The Great Frederick Fair is one of Frederick County’s greatest annual events. It is a time capsule overflowing with customs and traditions buried among today’s ever quickening pace. It is easily overlooked, pushed to the side, or forgotten about entirely. That’s unfortunate. The Fair is honest commercialism once a year. It is a way of life for many. The Fair is a crossroad for friends and families to interact amidst a rich landscape of traditions and rituals. It also serves as a common equalizer. No one is too good, too rich, too poor, or too beautiful to attend. The rides remain unchanged, the smell of livestock is ever present, and the food is always abundant. These are what bring its visitors together. The melding and the blending of tradition, agriculture, and commercialism fascinate me because of the organized simplicity. It is for this reason that the Frederick fair (and many like it) does what the large theme parks will never achieve; sincerity, honesty, and truthfulness. It’s like sitting down to a home-cooked meal. The Great Frederick Fair is from the heart. It does so without any pretensions or illusions. What's there is there, and it’s simply wonderful! These photographs serve to capture that honesty and sincerity through my particular vantage point. While there is so much to see and do, I’ve made every attempt to narrow down these photographs to those that provide ordinary details while also transcending time. Although easily missed, these details, I believe, give the Fair its unique presence among change. I am grateful to bear witness to the Fair’s timeless qualities. It is, and always will be, for me one of Frederick County’s greatest events.
